There’s nothing quite like the smell of apples and cinnamon baking in the oven, especially when the temperature starts to cool. It’s the kind of scent that wraps around you and makes the whole house feel warm and inviting. For me, apple crisp is the perfect way to slow down and savor the autumn season.

In our home, we enjoy our apple crisp warm as a cozy breakfast or a warm snack after school. The recipe we use is one adapted from one of the most popular recipes on AllRecipes. We cut down the sugar, added some more spices, and increased the topping by half. The result is a perfect blend of cinnamon apples with a buttery crumble.

The Recipe

Original Recipe from All Recipies can be found here.

Apples

  • 10 cups apples, peeled, cored and sliced

  • 1/2 cup white sugar

  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger

Crumble

  • 1 1/2 cup quick oats

  • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

  • 3/8 teaspoon baking powder

  • 3/8 teaspoon baking soda

  • 3/4 cup butter, melted

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  2. Place sliced apples in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Mix white sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and ground ginger together. Sprinkle over apples.

  3. Combine the quick oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and baking soda in a large bowl. Add in the melted butter and mix with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over apple mixture.

  4. Bake in the preheated oven until apple filling is bubbling, and top is golden brown, crisp, and caramelized around the edges, about 45 minutes.

Easy Tips for the Best Apple Crisp

Use whatever apples you have on hand. Make life easy and use whatever apples you have. I find the amount of sugar used in our recipe works well for Honey Crisp apples but will adjust if I'm using sweeter or tartier apples.

Make-ahead friendly. You can prep the topping in advance and keep it chilled until your apples are ready. This method also makes the crumble a little more crumbly as the butter rehardens.

Make it fancy. Add butterscotch pieces or walnuts to make the dish a little more special.

Why I Love It

Apple crisp is the dessert I turn to when I want the kitchen to smell like fall, when I need something simple but special, or when I just want to gather my family around the table for something warm and sweet. It’s comfort, joy, and memory making all in one dish.

So grab a few apples, preheat the oven, and let this apple crisp bring autumn into your home too.
