Kenzie's Bedroom - A Space Just for Her

One of my favourite things about home design is how a room can grow along with the person who lives in it. Recently, I had the joy of working on a bedroom remodel for Kenzie, the eldest daughter of three siblings. At 11 years old, Kenzie is right at that magical in-between stage—not quite a little girl anymore, but not yet a teenager. With two younger siblings, Maddy and Myles, she was ready for a space of her own to relax, recharge, and enjoy her hobbies.

The Vision
When I first talked to Kenzie (and of course, her parents), a few things were clear: she wanted a bedroom that felt like hers. That meant cozy corners for reading, a desk for school and creative projects, and a feature wall that reflect her personality. At the same time, we wanted to make sure the design could grow with her into her teen years.
The Design Plan
1. A Feature Wall to Show her Personality We started with a wallpapered feature wall to set the tone for the entire room. Wallpaper is such a fun way to add depth and bring in personality without overwhelming the space. It creates a backdrop for the upholstered bed and instantly makes the room feel intentional and styled.
2. The Comphiest Space: A Pink Upholstered Bed Kenzie asked for had a pink upholstered bed—and not just any pink bed, but a full-sized one she can sprawl out on for reading, lounging, or sleepovers. The choice of pink is cohesive with the wallpaper, adds a touch of softness, and is a pink that can grow with her.
3. Functional and Stylish Bedside Tables Next to the bed, we added matching bedside tables from a different room in the home for balance and functionality. Whenever I can, I like to reuse furniture and decor to be sustainable and mindful of cost. Sometimes, the items even have a bit of sentimental meaning or memories attached to them which makes them extra special. The nightables give Kenzie a place for her books, a lamp, and all those little things that make a bedroom feel cozy and lived-in.
4. A Desk for Work and Play A child needs a desk—whether it’s for homework, drawing, or just writing in a journal. We chose a piece that’s both practical and stylish, creating a designated spot that encourages focus and creativity but still feels inviting.
5. A Reading Spot to Escape Into Stories Because Kenzie loves to read, we carved out a reading spot using a papasan chair where she can curl up with her favourite books. This cozy nook is a quiet escape just for her, perfect for winding down at the end of the day.
6. A Squiggly Mirror for Fun Kenzie had one item she wanted without a doubt, and that was a squiggly mirror. We worked the squiggly mirror into the design by choosing one with a soft colored frame. It’s playful and modern, adding character while also being a functional piece she’ll love using as she gets older.
The Result
What we ended up with is a room that feels bright, playful, and perfectly Kenzie. It’s functional enough for school days, cozy enough for reading and relaxing, and full of personality that reflects who she is right now while still being able to grow with her into her teen years. For Kenzie, this isn’t just a bedroom but her own personal space in a busy household.
